In smart farming applications, DASS diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensors are deployed for tasks such as livestock counting. Mounted along narrow passageways and raceways, the sensors detect each animal as it passes the entry or exit point, enabling accurate, automated headcount of sheep and other herd animals without the need for physical contact or manual tallying.
Diffuse-reflective sensing presents two well-known challenges in this application: dark coats reflect very little light back to the receiver, and animals moving nose-to-tail can be read as a single object. DASS sensors are engineered to address both. With high sensing performance and a finely tuned detection algorithm, they maintain stable operation even on black or dark-coloured animals, and reliably separate animals passing in close succession. The result is dependable counting accuracy in real farm conditions, giving operators trustworthy data for herd management, inventory control and traceability.
